Summary: 11.02.11
Justification:
The layout of our installation changed may times during the development of this project.
The final layout for the exhibition was determined by the space that we had at the Kinetica exhibition, which was light in comparison to our work space in the TVU basement and the space was wider, but shorter than what we had experimented with.
We had planned to suspend our light source from nylon line attached to a tiny 3V battery a nice discreet suspension, but due to the lightness of Kinetica and the dullness of our LED connected to the battery we went back to our back up plan of using a mains powered volt converter.
Using the power supply was a compromise, as using the cable running over our mobile for suspending our light source looked bulky and also effected the flow and movement of our mobile.
The mobile was designed to have a free motion of up, down and also in a circular motion, but the cable restricted this movement and really only allowed an up and down motion, this give a limited light shape reflection on the canvas above.
We originally had planned on suspending one sail like canvas above our mirror and light which was silk organza that displayed the light reflection very well, but as we had no celling for the light that seeps through the organza to catch onto at Kinetica we decided to add a second canvas at an almost horizontal position which emulated the celling.
All the elements were suspended with nylon line which gave a lovely sense of floating to our installation, the exhibit was to be viewed from the front and not to be walked around as we had far to many nylon lines. Ideally we would love for the viewer to be able to walk all the way around.
As the viewer viewed our work from the front we needed to alter the angle of the silk organza canvas to allow visitors walking by the view the light forms from afar to draw in people.
Our mobile consisted of a 35cm length of metal suspended from a line of nylon and from either end of the length of metal was a line of nylon. On the left side attached was a silk organza triangular sail with tiny fishing weights hanging from the end of the line, 11 in total to balance the other end of the rod, which has suspended the power cable a small metal tube which houses the super bright 3V white LED.
To give the mobile as much movement as possible with the power cable attached we attached two fans to the left and right side wall of our exhibition space. This did give the mobile the up, down movement we were looking for but not the circular motion as the power cable restricted this.
The overal feeling and response from our installation was very positive and people seemed to be wowed by its simplicity and how such 3D light forms were form from just a mirror and light source.
Things i would like to improve on would be to try painting the walls of our exhibition space black as the pictures we had taken in the basement in a much darker environment were so beautiful, but did make the light reflection the made focus of our installation. I think the mobile and the free movement is also something that needs work on and the possibility of hanging the elements of the piece to enable the viewer to walk all the way around the piece in a much larger and darker environment.
Our artwork is an ongoing experiment into light, movement, kinetics, air and natural forms that are all around us, it also due our module criteria looks into interaction, immersive and virtual art works.

The Particle
Kinetica Art Fair
For four billion years, the earth was a glowing sphere, continuously pounded by the fall of meteorites. In this chaos existed the elements necessary for life. The chemical reactions of atomic particles generated molecules of a substantial degree of complexity. An atmosphere took shape. After the atoms became molecular soup, the extreme weather conditions caused another transformation. Chance significantly influenced the creation of new molecules, shaping millions of new combinations and complexities. The unstable molecules disappeared quickly, while the stable molecules persisted long enough to evolve. One after another, millennium after millennium, however complex the molecules were, they remained inert. It took hundreds of millions of years for nature to give birth to the first molecule capable of replicating itself.
‘The Particle’ explores these processes of creation and elapsing, evolving from external stimuli represented by the influx of viewers in its nearby vicinity. This breeding ground leads to the emergence of new forms and behaviors, complex or simple, elapsing or enduring over time. It is a body with its own internal resonance, creating space for sensory and kinesthetic experience. Experimenting with colour, sound and movement, the continuous rotation, speed and light create visual effects that define the spatial structure of the object. The translucent skin becomes visible, creating shape and volume. When there is a change in external conditions or a random mutation, the sculpture forms and reacts by generating events that modulate the sound and space. Given that the regulatory mechanism of the design is based on the haphazard decision-making manner, new models naturally emerge from the previous. The vibration of sound, colour and visual patterns evolve into chaos or order according to evolutionary algorithms that govern it. The structures cannot be anticipated, and evolve through continual iterations involving the viewer.
This piece was one of my favourites at Kinetica this year, the sound, the motion, the visual effect on your eyes, I loved it.

Justin Goodyer’s Adaptive Bloom
Adaptive Bloom is a matrix of servo- controlled mechanical flowers driven by a computer vision system. The patterns produced in the screen constantly evolve in an attempt to draw in observers and engage them. Once in close proximity the observer is able to trigger each flower individually using gestures.
Adaptive Bloom is a responsive screen speculatively proposed as a stage set. Blooming mechanical flowers are used as pixels in a grid formation responding to movement. It draws on the balletic tradition of a choreographic poem combining narrative, choreography and score.

Tomomi Sayuda
Oshibe, meaning stamen in Japanese, is a playful interactive music and lighting sculpture. It represents optimistic elements of life, for instance plants, eggs, light and the moon. When you put a semi-transparent egg on one of five stamens, Oshibe plays different ambient sounds, depending upon the particular stamen. Audiences can create their own sounds, using the locations and numbers of eggs. This interactive sculpture creates a therapeutic and positive atmosphere.

After battling with the light source we finally settled with the mains powered LED which gave us the best results for the conditions we were working in, ambient lighting.
I think as a whole we were really pleased we had managed to complete our installation ready for the art collectors view and really pleased with our end results.
This project for us is an ongoing experiment of natural forms, light, motion, wind, balance and reflections and as it stands in the Kinetica Arts fair we are definatly happy with its overall feel there are definatly a few things we would like to tinker with to give a greater result to what we are looking for , to allow the viewing to we mesmerised my its beauty and inquisitiveness of our such an kinetic sculpture works.
The mobile we would like to improve to allow more free motion, currently the wind and sail allow the LED light to bounce gently up and down but as the mains power cable restricts any circular motion we are not seeing the full potential of the light reflection, the shapes and evolving shapes that come with the up, down, left, right motion.

We also had a visit from a photographer who was very keen for us to visit his studio to experiment with our installation on a larger scale in his warehouse. He works as a fashion photographer and his studio space had very large white curved walls which would be ideal to project our light onto. We passed on his details to Ray, i think this would be a lovely extension to our project.
Another visitor expressed how he could imagine Candy and Candy loving our work as they are property developers and he could imagine our work in the corner of a show room.
Overall the comments were very positive people seemed mesmerised by the whole installation almost to a point of not understanding how such results are possible as if we had projected our 3D like image on to the canvas.

The image above shows the final layout for our installation at the Kinetica Art Fair.
This diagram shows the mobile design we choose for our installation for the exhibition which relies on mains power, we used a 3v Super bright LED, Nylon line, Power cables, Silk organza for the sail, 11 small weights, cotton thread to attach the sail to the nylon, a bike spoke for the axes of the mobile and a small cylinder tube to incase the LED.
The images below show the start of the mobile being constructed we ended up using a spoke from an old bike wheel which gave us a very stream line piece of strong metal that we could then suspend from nylon directly below our silk and above our mirror.
We tested out the new idea of using a battery for our LED but unfortunately the results were not what we where hoping for, the image was not bright enough which meant us going back to our original idea of using a mains power via a volt changer.
We did not bring with us the equipment we needed to complete or installation in day one so we needed to return tomorrow and finish off the mobile and run a cable in for the LED and set up our fans which would blow the sail attached to the mobile giving the evolving shaped from the reflection we were looking for.
We altered the height of the mirror carefully balanced on tubs and boxes from around us to find the perfect position to give us maximum effect. We used our iphone 4s to reflect into the mirror to check the results each time we adjusted the height.
We had to work out the focal height and throw the other side to give us the kind of shape from the reflection we were looking for and the best quality and size.
Once the position was agreed we began hanging the mirror using nylon line attached to screw in white hocks in various positions.
The images below show the new and improved silk organza hanging arrangement, i feel the new position plays with the constrains of the three walls surrounding us and looks more like a sail than a projection screen, much happier. We go onto experiment with the positioning of the mirror height to give us the largest and the highest quality reflection possible.

We started to hang the silk organza after sewing the lops on all four of the corners with heavy duty nylon line attached to screw in hocks on the walls of our space.
We hung the silk as we had planned in our final meeting pria to this day, but something didn't feel right it looked to geometric and to ordinary, Thanks to Ray we started to think outside of the box and started to re think the angle at which we would hand the organza.
